What is a healthy body fat percentage

Body fat percentage says more than the scale. Here are the healthy ranges and how to measure them without pricey gear.

What is a healthy body fat percentage

The scale measures your total weight, but it does not know how much is muscle and how much is fat. Body fat percentage does, which makes it a far more useful guide when your goal is composition and not just a number.

Healthy ranges by sex

14-24% / 21-31%
Fitness to average body fat range according to ACE, for men and women respectively.
American Council on Exercise (ACE)

Women need and hold more essential fat than men for hormonal and reproductive reasons, so their healthy ranges are higher. It is not worse or better, it is normal physiology.

The lower limit matters

3-5% / 8-13%
Minimum essential fat for vital functions in men and women.
American Council on Exercise (ACE)

Dropping below essential fat is not a healthy target. That level only shows up briefly in physique competitors and cannot be held without hormonal consequences.

How to measure it at home

  • Tape measure with the US Navy method: neck, waist and hip.
  • Bioimpedance scales: convenient but sensitive to hydration.
  • DEXA: the most accurate, but needs a clinic and costs money.
