Walking is one of the easiest ways to add movement to a normal day, and a common question is how many calories it actually burns. The honest answer is that it depends on you, mostly your body weight, how fast you walk and how long you keep going. Once you know those three things you can produce a reasonable estimate in a few seconds.
What drives the number
Energy cost rises with body mass because a heavier body needs more energy to move the same distance. Pace matters too, since a faster walk raises intensity, and duration is simply the multiplier. This is why two people on the same walk can burn very different amounts.
- Body weight: heavier bodies burn more for the same walk.
- Pace: a brisk walk costs more energy per minute than a stroll.
- Duration: total burn scales directly with time on your feet.
- Terrain: hills and soft ground add extra cost.
The MET formula
A MET is a multiple of your resting energy use. One MET is roughly what you burn sitting quietly. The estimate is: calories per minute = MET x 3.5 x body weight in kg / 200. A comfortable walk is about 3.0 METs, a brisk walk around 4.3, and a fast walk near 5.0.
For example, a 70 kg person walking briskly at about 4.3 METs burns roughly 5.3 calories per minute, or near 160 calories in 30 minutes. Change the weight or the pace and the number moves with it.
The practical takeaway is that consistency beats precision. A daily brisk walk adds up quickly over a week, and small increases in pace or time raise the total without needing any equipment.
