Resting Metabolic Rate Explained
Most of the calories you burn happen while you do nothing. Resting metabolic rate is that baseline, and it drives your daily energy needs.

Resting metabolic rate, or RMR, is the number of calories your body burns at rest just to keep you alive. That covers breathing, circulation, brain activity, and repairing cells. Even if you spent the whole day lying still, you would burn this energy. Understanding RMR helps you see where most of your calories actually go.
RMR versus BMR
RMR and basal metabolic rate, or BMR, describe almost the same thing but are measured under different conditions. BMR is measured in a strict lab state, right after waking, fully rested, and fasted. RMR is measured under looser conditions, so it tends to come out slightly higher. In everyday use the two terms are often treated as interchangeable.
- BMR: strict overnight fast, complete rest, controlled temperature.
- RMR: relaxed but resting, less strict conditions.
- RMR usually reads a bit higher than BMR.
- For daily planning the difference is small and practical estimates work fine.
What drives your RMR
Several factors set your resting burn. Lean body mass is the biggest one, since muscle and organs are metabolically active tissue. Larger and taller bodies burn more, men tend to have higher RMR than women due to more lean mass, and RMR gently declines with age. Genetics and hormones add smaller individual differences.
Why RMR matters for your goals
Because RMR is the largest slice of most people's daily calorie burn, it anchors any nutrition plan. Add your activity and the calories used to digest food on top of RMR, and you get your total daily energy expenditure. That total is what you compare your intake against to lose, maintain, or gain weight.
