Maximum heart rate is the highest number of beats per minute your heart can reach during all out effort. It is useful because training zones are built as percentages of it. The catch is that you usually estimate it with a formula, and formulas only approximate what is true for any single person.

Common formulas

The best known estimate is 220 minus your age. So a 40 year old lands near 180 beats per minute. It is simple and good enough for general planning, but it can be off by more than ten beats in either direction. Another option, the Tanaka formula, uses 208 minus 0.7 times age and tends to fit older adults a little better.

Turning it into zones

Once you have an estimated max, zones are just percentage bands. A common setup is easy at 50 to 60 percent, moderate at 60 to 70, aerobic at 70 to 80, threshold at 80 to 90 and maximal above 90. Most steady training lives in the moderate to aerobic range.

For everyday training, the formula is a fine starting point. If you want precision, do a supervised field test or use a lab assessment, then recalculate your zones from that measured number.
